Abstract
Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 2017 virtual reality installation Carne y arena is an invitation to experience crossing the desert as a migrant and facing US immigration officials. The critical reception of the installation has been positive, as much due to its cinematographic innovation as to its express intention of inspiring empathy for refugees. Nevertheless, an analysis of the Mexican director’s focus Central American people reveals an impulse to reproduce the binary logic of North/South and its violent effects. This leads to a southward displacement of the border between North and South, thus positioning Mexico as part of the privileged North.
